Joomla CMS (Content Management System) - from $1595

What is Joomla CMS?

Joomla is an open source content management system (CMS) which has won many awards for its (relative) ease of use and its functionality. It first began in 2000, and now has over 200,000 community users and contributors around the world. The beauty of Joomla is that it can accomodate your growing and changing needs.  For example, you can start off with a simple Joomla site that just has ordinary web pages (which are of course editable via the admin system), and then "turn on" or "plug in" a whole range of other functions as you go.

WebCare offers affordable Joomla web design and development services. Have a look at our creative Joomla web design portfolio. Our designers are skilled at sculpturing your ideas into web design. Joomla CMS is a software that is really easy to work with and handful. We have clients from Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Hobart in Australia for Joomla Web Design.

What are its main features?

At its most basic, Joomla content management system lets you add new pages, edit existing pages, hide or activate pages, format content, add images and much more. It is a complete content management system. In addition, Joomla has a range of other built-in functions including:

  • newsletter manager
  • media manager
  • access manager (so you can crete different permissions levels for various people or groups of people)
  • polls (so you can run pop quizzes on your site)
  • banner manager
  • contacts manager
  • newsfeeds
  • search
  • weblinks manager
  • archive manager
  • breadcrumbs (which show the visitor where in the site they are)
  • Most Read & Latest News boxes
  • Random Image
  • Related Data (to display similar content items)
  • Statistics (basic data about the site and users)
  • Syndicate (which shows the feed types available for the website)
  • Who's Online (the no of guests and members online at any time)
  • Search Engine Friendly URL's (which help your site to get better search engine rankings in Google)

You can choose which of these feature you want to have active, and they can be switched on and off in the admin system.

What Extensions can be Added to a Joomla Website?

In addition to the built-in functionality of Joomla, there are also an extensive range of "plug-ins" (also called "extensions"). The extensions are created and maintained by third parties and may be free or commercial. There are currenlty more than 4000 extensions available for Joomla including:

  • Access & Security (such as backup, captcha, site access, user authentication)
  • Advertising (such as affiliates, amazon, banner management, classified ads, google ads)
  • Calendars & Events (such as birthdays, clocks, countdown, events registration and festivities)
  • Clients (such as CRM, Heldesk and Online status and profile)
  • Project & Task Management
  • Communication (such as chat, forums, mailing and distribution, quizzes and surveys)
  • Content and News (such as blogs, news tickers, quotes, RSS, ratings and reviews)
  • ecommerce (we use a plug in called Virtue Mart to add an online store to Joomla)
  • Directories (such as glossary, dictionary, portfolio)
  • External Content (such as radio, news channels, photo channels, TV & Movie channels, weather, wikis)
  • Financial & Statistics (such currency converters, calculators and stock market)
  • Images & multimedia (such as audio and video players, image rotators, slideshows, maps, shoutcast and podcasts, virtual reality and 3D)
  • Languages (such as multi-lingual content and automatic translators)
  • Search and Indexing (such as domain search, site search and tag clouds)
  • Site Management (such as site map, content stats, ranks, SEFs, site analytics, and visitors)
  • Sports & Games (such as board and table games, sports scores, tips and bets)
  • Style & Design (such as accessibility, flash management, popups, print and PDF, tips and notes, typography)
  • Vertical Markets (such as bookings and reservations, books and libraries, education, food and beverage, real estate, taxes and mortgages, and vehicles)

You can have a look at all of these extensions (and more) on the Joomla Extensions page (http://extensions.joomla.org/).  If you are interested in utilising one or more of these extensions on your website, we can give you a fixed price quote on the installation and configuration of each extension.

Is there a Downside to Using Joomla?

Yes, there is!  If you do not need all this functionality, then Joomla control panel may seem confusing.  If all you want is to be able to add new pages, edit existing pages and a few other bits and pieces (such as a newsletter manager or page categories or a testimonial module), then Joomla is overkill. You would be much better off to go with our standard CMS package (link to CMS page).  We have had some clients who have found the Joomla interface to be daunting - and the learning curve to be steep.

There is no question that Joomla does a great job at simplifying the use of some very sophisticated functionality, but - and it is a BIG BUT - when you have that much functionality, there will always be an additional layer of complexity.  If that sounds scary, stick with our standard CMS.  If you are reasonably computer literate, you pick up computer skills easily and you have a need for at least some of that extra functionality, then Joomla is for you!
